Toronto Curling Club Plaque Unveiling

Toronto, ON – November 22, 2019 – A Heritage Toronto plaque will be unveiled at Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club on Friday, December 6. This plaque recognizes the original Toronto Curling Club for its contributions to the City of Toronto and to the sport of curling.

Founded in 1836, the Toronto Curling Club is the second-oldest curling club in Canada. In 1887, the Club moved to the premises of the Victoria Skating and Curling Association on the east side of Huron Street. University of Toronto buildings now stand at this location. The Heritage Toronto plaque will be permanently installed where the Huron Street clubhouse once stood.

The Club celebrated many firsts: the first interprovincial curling game in 1861 and the first international bonspiel in 1865. An innovator which enhanced the sport of curling, the Toronto Curling Club was the first to introduce artificial curling ice in an enclosed rink in 1925 and the first to provide standardized granite rocks in 1937.

In 1957, the Toronto Curling Club amalgamated with Toronto Cricket Skating Club to become Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club.

The Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling has recently been honoured with the Toronto Star 2019 Readers’ Choice Diamond Award for best curling club in Toronto. The Club is an active, vibrant and social neighbourhood private club that carries a proud legacy of athletic achievement.

Media is invited to attend this ceremony on December 6 beginning at 12:30 pm and luncheon that will follow. Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club is located at 141 Wilson Avenue, Toronto.
